This Little Light

When I first came to Waldorf Education, my oldest child was 3 years old. For a couple of years, I had read a few Waldorf blogs and had come across Betty Jones’s A Child’s Seasonal Treasury, but that was it! I had just delivered my 2nd child, Hannah, and felt an intense desire to make some changes in my parenting and in our home culture. Waldorf Education helped to provide that new foundation and amazing mentors stepped into my life to show me how simple home rhythms and festival time could be.

One of these first exposures was at a Waldorf Homeschool Lantern Walk in Utah. I had never heard of Martinmas or Lantern Walks and although my husband had to work late that night, I knew that I needed to attend. I bundled up my two little ones and headed over to this “festival”. A unique warmth filled my spirit as I participated in the reverent and uplifting lantern walk. A communion with fellow homeschoolers, Spirit and the night sky occurred as I sang the songs I was familiar with and tried to learn the new ones. That night when we got home, we could hear Noah singing “This Little Light of Mine” in his room. When we went to check on him, he was fast asleep but had made a circle of his toy cars gathered around a simple battery operated candle. That experience stuck with our whole family and changed the direction of our family life.

Now it is a few years later and I am the one hosting and leading the songs. I am full of so much gratitude to be in that role.

This year I wanted to really focus on the idea of sharing our light with the world. Instead of holding the event in a secluded place, we walked right through our downtown.

We walked from the Cathedral of the Madeleine thru Temple Square and ended at Siegfried’s German Deli for an amazing feast! It was touching to see the children sing the lantern songs and hand out some food to the homeless. During these times of trouble and turmoil it was wonderful to be a part of something that was full of so much light!

These are some of our yearly favorites:

My lantern, my lantern,

shining near and far,

shining like a moon,

shining like a sun,

shining like a silver star.

My lantern, my lantern.

I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me
Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.
The cock does crow, the cat meows, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.
‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.

I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me
Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.
So shine your light through the still dark night, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom
‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.

Let it shine, shine, shine

Let it shine.
